We know the IRS purposely stonewalled the approval of non-profit applications from Tea Party and other conservative groups seeking tax exempt status between 2010 and 2012. We know the IRS used a “be-on-the-lookout” (BOLO) list of terms which would trigger applications to be flagged for extra scrutiny.
The actual BOLO list, uncovered by Judicial Watch investigators, was as follows:
The IRS was targeting groups that disagreed with President Obama; merely mentioning policy concerns about government spending or taxation could land citizens on the hit list. Being a Tea Party group ensured harassment and the rejection of tax exempt status. In others words, the Obama Administration was using the IRS as a political weapon.
This abuse was worse than Watergate.
How bad was the suppression that came from the targeting of these groups promoting patriotic activities? It was epic. Over the course of 27 months, not a single Tea Party-type organization received tax exempt status.
Some conservatives were forced to answer outrageous IRS questionnaires, or were simply denied the critical tax exempt status they deserved. Without tax exempt status many Tea Party groups were forced to scale back their activities or even shut down. All while liberal groups were speedily approved…
Make no mistake, this stunning attack on American citizens by their own government was not an accident, it was directed from Washington, DC and appears to have been coordinated by then IRS Director of Exempt Organizations, Lois Lerner.
The Obama IRS also audited conservative organizations and, contrary to law, disclosed confidential taxpayer information on conservatives in an all-out effort to silence dissent. As early as 2009, emails uncovered by Judicial Watch show an FEC lawyer asking Lois Lerner for records of specific groups in their crosshairs. The evidence was only discovered due to the tenacious efforts of Judicial Watch investigators and attorneys. It could be the tip of an iceberg.
Even in 2013, as the illegal targeting plan began to unravel and details became public, Lois Lerner was still plotting with members of Obama’s Department of Justice and liberal Senators against conservative groups. The details of the plot were uncovered in emails obtained from a Judicial Watch FOIA investigation into the scandal.
Judicial Watch filed a Freedom of Information (FOIA) lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) asking the District Court for the District of Columbia to compel the IRS to produce records of all communications relating to the review process for organizations seeking 501(c)(4) non-profit status since January 1, 2010. The lawsuit comes in response to the refusal of the IRS to comply with four FOIA requests dating back to May 2013.
Lois Lerner invoked her Fifth Amendment right not to incriminate herself in front of the House Oversight & Government Reform Committee on May 22, 2013. Lerner was eventually forced to resign in disgrace in September of that year.
In June of 2014 the IRS claimed that it had lost thousands of Lois Lerner’s emails sent between January 1, 2009 and April 11, 2011. Judicial Watch filed a Motion for Status Conference, and within hours was granted a hearing in the United States District Court for the District of Columbia to confer about the emails of Lois Lerner and other IRS officials.
Since then Judicial Watch forced – via the Courts – the IRS to produce two sets of sworn declarations detailing the loss and attempted recovery of the “missing” emails. Citing IRS wrongdoing, Judicial Watch has filed a Motion for Limited Discovery in the United States District Court for the District of Columbia to force the IRS to explain their actions in court. This motion was filed on September 17, 2014.
